DEPARTMENT PROFILE

The Department of Commerce was founded in the academic year 1980-81, marking the introduction of the Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.) degree course. This program laid the foundation for commerce education within the institution, offering students a comprehensive curriculum focused on business principles, accounting, finance, and related areas.
Building on this foundation, an evening course for the Master of Commerce (M.Com.) degree was introduced in the academic year 1985-86. This addition was aimed at catering to students who sought advanced studies in commerce while accommodating those with daytime commitments. However, due to insufficient enrollment, the evening M.Com. course was eventually discontinued. In 1997, recognizing the demand for higher studies in commerce, the department reintroduced the M.Com. program as a regular day course, attracting students who aspired to deepen their expertise in commerce.
Later, following the bifurcation of the college, the postgraduate M.Com. course was shifted to the Dr. Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi Government Institute for Post Graduate Studies and Research, allowing the institute to specialize in postgraduate education while the Department of Commerce continued to focus on undergraduate studies.
At Present, the department has an authorized intake of 60 students for the B.Com. degree course, maintaining a streamlined yet competitive cohort of students each academic year.
The implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) brought significant changes to the department’s curriculum. Starting in the 2023-24 academic year, the B.Com. program was updated to align with NEP standards, reflecting a more interdisciplinary, flexible approach intended to equip students with relevant skills and knowledge in line with the latest educational reforms. Further expanding its offerings, the department is set to introduce a four-year B.Com. (Honors) degree course beginning with the 2024-25 academic year, again in line with NEP guidelines. This Honors program will provide students an extended, In-depth curriculum with opportunities for research and specialization, designed to foster advanced knowledge and practical skills. Through these ongoing enhancements, the Department of Commerce continues to adapt to educational advancements, aiming to offer students a rigorous and holistic commerce education.
