DEPARTMENT PROFILE

Department of Tamil, (Arignar Anna Govt. Arts College, Karaikal) under affiliation to Madras University was started in July 1968, and then later renamed Arignar Anna Govt. Arts and Science College, Karaikal under affiliation with Pondicherry University. With the introduction of the Undergraduate programme in Tamil Literature in June 1973, the department expanded its horizons to cater for the ever-expanding student population willing to pursue higher studies and better careers.

As of present, six faculty members, two of whom hold Doctorate Degrees, have been serving around 100 students whose enthusiastic participation in the learning process makes the Department a dynamic and proactive one. Apart from catering to the curriculum needs of the students, the department has a holistic approach to the academic process where the focus is not just on facilitating getting through the exam process, but to prepare them to be a part of the future where they would contribute to India shaping into a developed nation.

For this purpose, the department has been making collective efforts to create space for student participation in skill enhancement programmes. These include special emphasis on improving their language skills, both Tamil and English as well as soft skills so as to enhance their scope for career pursuits across India. Periodical elocution and debate competitions as well as seminars and cultural programmes are all part of the department's holistic approach to the idea of educating the student. The Department will continue to innovate and continue to focus on novel areas of student education as they emerge to accommodate more students to earn a better living in the future.
